Encode Videos With HandBrake Batch Encoder

Today I want to show you  how to encode your videos. Some times you may need to encode your videos for security reasons. HandBrake Batch Encoder is an useful GUI-based application which is developed to use the powers of HandBrake to encode media files in bulk. For those who haven’t heard about HandBrake before -  with its user-friendliness, super fast media conversion, and diverse encoding capabilities, it is arguably one of the best encoder available. HandBrake Batch Encoder offers you the same encoding quality level with being highly vocal in terms of interactivity. Along with HandBrake dependent installation package, developer also offers it as a standalone application without requiring any pre-requisites. The application supports MPG,WMV, AVI, MKV along with a list of presets to let user quickly select most suitable encoding configuration for the target device.

BatchEncoder-GUI-for-HandBrake

It is further possible to choose file extensions and add metadata to MP4/M4V files. The application usage is pretty straight-forward, offering all the options to manipulate encoding process on the main screen.

All that is required is to specify source and output folder. Once paths are set, specify file extension, and handbrake priority along with options to delete source file and adding metadata, however these options are non-imperative, you can quickly start encoding process after selecting your device from preset list.

While media file is being encoded, you can view the information (such as, quality, video fps, and ETA) regarding the encoding process in HandBrake CLI-based console.

Firefox Add-ons: PrintPDF

Sooner or later we all need to save web pages locally. Maybe it’s a page with a tutorial for something you’ll need to do in the future, maybe it’s the sales page that you think has great copywriting and are not sure for how long it will stay online.

Regardless of the reason, saving the page as an HTML file is not an effective solution. That is because you’ll need to save both page and the respective files (which usually go in a separate folder), and because when trying to open it again it might be displayed incorrectly on your browser.

printpdf

A better solution is to use a Firefox extension called PrintPDF. Once installed you’ll be able to save web pages directly into your computer as a PDF file.

It works both on Windows and Linux, and the only missing functionality right now is that links will not be present in the PDF. I believe the developer will be adding this feature soon though.

Finally, yes I know Mac users can do this by default, so no need to brag about it!

God Mode:39 Secret Windows 7 Shortcuts

If you create a new folder using an arbitrary name, followed by a period and the GUID {ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}, you end up with a categorized list of Control Panel tasks. There’s nothing new or hidden in this list, but calling it “God mode” seems to have given this tip wings.

As with the other shortcuts, the process of turning one of these GUIDs into a shortcut that opens a shell folder or Control Panel item is straightforward. Start by right-clicking any empty space on the desktop or in a folder. Right-click and choose New, Folder. Type the name you want to appear under the shortcut, followed by a period and then the GUID shown in the list here, complete with curly braces on either end. Press enter and voila, you’re done.

I had compiled a list of these shortcuts for use in Windows 7 . I found that list the other day and just finished testing all of these shortcuts on a pair of clean Windows 7 installations. Here, then, is my Ultimate List of ‘God Mode’ shortcuts for Windows 7.

Block Facebook Scripts with Facebook Blocker Extension

Facebook is now very popular, about five hundred million people around the world have joined Facebook, and the number is still increasing.  Most weblogs and a lot of other websites have started to use Facebook scripts on their Internet pages. The most prominent script is Facebook Like, which displays a like button and the “likes” on the web page. Likes are basically votes for that page by Facebook users. There are other Facebook scripts, like recommendations for instance that can appear on websites as well.  Some people don’t like these Facebook scripts and want to block them. Here Facebook Blocker comes.

Facebook Blocker is a web browser extension that blocks those Facebook plugins and scripts from appearing on third party websites. The scripts will still work fine on Facebook. Scripts that are integrated directly and by the use of iFrames are blocked. A positive side effect is that it will also block Facebook from tracking the browsing history much like tracking cookies do.

Facebook Connect, which is a service by Facebook to offer sign-in to services using their Facebook account, will continue to work on third party sites as well.

The Facebook Blocker extension removes the Facebook script from the website so that it is not executed or visible anymore. This is an automated process. The user basically needs to install the extension and keep it activated for as long as Facebook content’s should be blocked in the web browser.

Download Facebook Blocker from Webgraph. Facebook Blocker is available for Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox.

ChromeBlock-Block third-party tracking

Third-party browser tracking — and how to give users more control over it — is a hot topic right now.Microsoft and the FCC have similar plans, one former Google employee recently took the wraps off his take, and now there’s another Chrome extension which turns the tracking blocker knob up to eleven.

blocker

It’s called ChromeBlock, and it gives you an easy way to shut down around 90 different Web tracking networks. Just about every well-known harvester is listed: Google, MSN, Alexa, Doubleclick, Omniture, Quantcast, Tynt and Cleeki, to name a few. You can choose to block networks as DNT detects their presence on a page, or you can opt out in advance by clicking the show global settings link. The overlay on DNT’s browser action button tells you how many networks are detected and how many you’ve chosen to block.

ChromeBlock works nicely in tandem with Disconnect, so those of you looking for as much tracking protection as possible can go ahead and install both extensions. Even if you’re not concerned with blocking the connections, it’s very interesting to see which sites you browse are sending data to different providers.

How to Fix Google Chrome Crash

Google Chrome crashGoogle Chrome update very frequently, maybe that’s why Google Chrome is so powerful and fast. But if you ‘re running Google Dev channel version of Chrome, you may notice the latest update really broke. The Dev version is usually unstable and easy to crash. The problem is the GPU accelerated canvas option. So, let’s fix it.

A: Disable GPU

Since the crash is caused by GPU accelerated canvas, you can just disable GPU accelerated temporarily.  Simply tack this on to the end of the command, either through the command prompt, or in the shortcut.

--disable-accelerated-compositing

You’d want to head into about:flags, remove the experiment, and then you won’t need the command line anymore.

B: Delete Your Preferences File

Now head to the following folder to delete your preferences file, which contains all the settings, including the option to have GPU acceleration enabled or disabled.

%localappdata%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\

Once you’re there, find the Preferences file, and kill it.

Update: alternatively, as tahlyn points out in the comments, you can open up the Preferences file in Notepad and remove this bit of text:

“gpu-canvas-2d”

If you were using Google Sync, you’ll need to enter those details again, along with any other settings.

Solution 3: Replace Chrome Dev with an Older Build Version

Head into the following folder by pasting this into an open Explorer window—of course, if you’ve installed Chrome elsewhere, you’ll need to head there instead.

%localappdata%\Google\Chrome\Application

Once you’re there, you should see two folders with numeric names, like this:

Rename the newer one with something else (or move it out of the directory), and then rename the older one to match the version number of the newer one.

Open up chrome, head to about:flags and then turn off GPU Accelerated Canvas.

Close Chrome, then head back into the folder, rename them back to normal, and Chrome should be working fine again.

Solution 1:  Uninstall Dev Channel, Install Beta Instead

Yeah, this solution is pretty obvious, but it’s also the best one. Any time the Dev channel is acting too unstable, you should simply uninstall it, and then head over to the channel releases page and install the Beta version instead.

Or you could always install the stable release if you really wanted to.
